There are some delicious group-stage matchups confirmed by the draw on December 2, with France and Netherlands set to meet, as will Spain and Italy, while England face Denmark.

When is Euro 2024 opening match?

  • Date: June 14, 2024
  • Time: 9 p.m. local CEST (UTC -1)
  • Match: Germany vs. Scotland
  • Location: Allianz Arena (Munich, Germany)

The opening match of the 2024 European Championship will feature hosts Germany take on Scotland at Allianz Arena in Munich on Friday, June 14.

Keeping with tradition, the hosts always play in the opening match of most major football tournaments, including the World Cup. To logistically make that happen, Germany were automatically drawn into first position in Group A during the draw on December 2, 2023.

Germany vs. Scotland head to head, matchup history

Germany and Scotland have matched up 17 times previously, with Die Mannschaft winning eight of them, plus five draws and four Scotland victories.

The recent history is, as expected, largely skewed towards the Germans, however. While Scotland won three of the first four meetings, Germany have won eight of the past 11. There have been two draws and just one Scotland victory in that span.

They have not met in nearly nine years, last facing off in September of 2015 when a 54th-minute goal from Ilkay Gundogan gave Germany a 3-2 victory in Euro qualifying.
