Lineups, starting 11 for Newcastle vs Man City: Kevin De Bruyne could start Premier League clash

Manchester City will aim to trim Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to two points when they travel to Newcastle United on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions have a game in hand on Jurgen Klopp’s side, which they will temporarily make up as Liverpool sit this weekend out as part of the division’s staggered winter break.

City and Newcastle have already faced each other twice this season, with Julian Alvarez scoring the only goal in a deserved August win for the hosts at the Etihad Stadium.

Newcastle prevailed by the same scoreline thanks to Alexander Isak’s second-half goal when the teams met in the Third Round of the Carabao Cup a month later.

Last season’s corresponding fixture at St James’ Park produced a six-goal thriller as City took an early lead but were forced to come from 3-1 down after halftime to claim a 3-3 draw.

Joelinton is a significant addition to Newcastle’s injury woes and faces up to six weeks on the sidelines with a thigh injury.

There is no let-up elsewhere with Elliot Anderson (back), Joe Willock (Achilles) and Harvey Barnes (foot) all still out. Callum Wilson (calf) and Jacob Murphy (shoulder) are closing in on returns but this weekend comes too soon.

  • Injured: Joelinton, Anderson, Willock, Barnes, Wilson, Murphy, Pope, Targett, Manquillo
  • Suspended: Tonali

Despite preaching a “softly-softly” approach for Kevin De Bruyne after five months out following hamstring surgery, Guardiola said the Belgium midfielder was fit to start at his pre-match news conference.

Even so, a place on the bench still feels more likely after such a long lay-off. Erling Haaland (foot) and John Stones (ankle) are still out, while Manuel Akanji is unavailable after being on the receiving end of a heavy challenge during the 5-0 FA Cup win over Huddersfield Town.

Jack Grealish is a doubt after missing training sessions with a sickness bug this week, meaning Jeremy Doku could make his first start since suffering a thigh injury in early December. Bernardo Silva and Kalvin Phillips are available again, having suffered from illness themselves last week.
